The one chairlift actually does not open until tomorrow, so we ripped out the skins for a little tour. The taxi ride is straight up hill from our hostel, about ten minutes, to the base of the ski run. Skinning up the only ski run, we had a great view of the bay behind us.
The refugio at the top was closed, next time.
We skinned to tree line in about an hour which brought us to the base of the glacier. What looked like to us a permanent snow field.
The wind was possibly the most memorable aspect of the day. The possibilities for future tours seemed promising, and we are inspired to ride the open chairlift and skin for higher sights.
The skiing was... interesting. Very wind affected, but the view was unbeatable.
Which way to the warm beach?
The base of the glacier had a great little warming hut, which even though the lift was not open, was still serving beer.
The hostel's lounge is a great place to watch the sunset and strike up a conversation with a Brit of all people on the 4th of July.
We went into town to try and round up some Americans to no avail. Not one in sight. The first flakes flew in town while we enjoyed a warm cafe on main street.
Off to the local Irish pub, which was as American as we could find, for some burgers.
